Dear reader,
Having consumed half a century I have come to the conclusion that in life you have to do one thing in order to be secured in every situation whatever that may be; be it a war, a recession or a pandemic: Learn something so well that it can make you useful even to your enemy.

I recently read a book by Martin Gillard called “Where is my home?” about a refugee who survived the second world war because he was excellent at growing the finest grapes for French wines employed by the Nazis. It may not sound very patriotic, but he managed to keep himself and his family alive in human conditions.
It struck as a revelation to me. I realised that no matter how hard you try to succeed aiming at money or career, assets, and fame…everything goes down the drain. In cases of emergency only something you know how to perform well can save you. In combination of course with the versatility skills you might have to see the potential.
I sent my daughter a message advising her to become excellent at what she is studying. Given the fact that she loves what she is studying. As a first step to excellence is to love what you are trying to be good at. Do not aim to interpret your efforts in money. Security of survival is more vital. A kind of survival that will not harm your dignity.
Learn something that can go wherever you might have to find yourself. If you love it and surround it by your passion it will definitely help you. There might be other people better than you are of course. The greatest enemy of good is better undeniably. But here comes your ability to discern the potential and take advantage of it.
Do not be afraid of change. Life is constantly proving to be unstable. Grab every opportunity and seize the day!
